Munich 1972:
The Secret Behind the Olympic Attacks
The assassination of Israeli athletes during the Olympic Games
in Munich in September 1972 has inspired various films and
continues to do so. All are based upon the outstanding investigation
results of filmmaker Wilfried Huismann. He was the first to
find the only surviving assassin. Palestinian Jamal Chashi
hiding out of fear of Mossad’s revenge, and make him
disclose his secerts in front of a camera.
Prior to this, it has long been unclear why the siege became
a massacre, in which all eleven hostages, one police officer
and five of the assassins died. During his investigations
in Israel and Germany, Huismann first encountered a defensive
wall of silence before finally finding witnesses who wanted
to speak: Muki Betser, Commandant of the Israeli Special Unit,
Dr. Georg Wolf, the officer-in-charge of the police at the
time and a confidante of Arafat who explains the latter’s
role in the attack.
Huismnn’s film reveals that the hostages could have
been saved but the West German Government, under Willy Brandt,
bowed to Israeli pressure ad decided against the diplomatic
solution that had already been worked out. So the hostages
were sacrificed for a political agenda.
