Atomic Journeys
In this extraordinary production, Peter Kuran, the award-winning
creator of “Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie”
takes you to places where few people realize the U.S. government
exploded nuclear weapons.
From the wilds of Alaska to the back country of Mississippi,
an amazing variety of tests were carried out. Many of these
tests were part of Atomic Energy Commission projects to explore
the use of these weapons for “peaceful purposes”.
Project “Plowshare” examined using nuclear explosions
for building new canals and harbors. Project “Gas Buggy”
used atomic bombs to help increase the flow of natural gas
from wells in Colorado, and Project “Vela Uniform”
was designed to detect seismic signals of nuclear explosions…and
hide these signals as well.
Through the use of spectacular, never-before-seen nuclear
test footage, Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero travels
to ten former testing sites and explores the history, physical
changes resulting from the tests and current condition of
these amazing and important places.
Finally, you will visit the Nevada Test Site, known as the
most bombed place on earth. Over 900 nuclear explosions where
detonated at this location – an area larger than the
State of Rhode Island. Although many of these places were
kept secret, today most are open to visitors. They preserve
the incredible legacy of America’s nuclear testing program
and stand as important reminders of the fine line between
the progress of mankind and the destruction of the earth.
Once you understand what happened at Ground Zero, you will
never be the same.
